Personal Description:

I am a classically trained Pianist and have been playing the piano since the age of 8. I am an experienced performer, and have been involved in many different types of musical activities throughout my career accompanying many choirs, instrumentalists and singers. I have also been a Musical Director for over 20 years directing and conducting musicals and operettas for many local groups in Wales, London and the South.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching the piano for 15 years, and have prepared many pupils for grade examinations and auditions for more advanced studies at music schools or colleges. If pupils wish to take exams, I prepare pupils for ABRSM and LCM exams in piano (up to grade 8) and theory (up to grade 5). To date I have a 100% exam pass rate, and in the last year I entered 17 pupils for examinations of which 12 achieved Distinctions, 3 Merits, and 2 Passes.

In 2017 one of my pupils aged 10 took a LCM Grade 6 Piano Recital exam and achieved 100/100 - a result that I am naturally particularly proud of.
I am a member and registered teacher of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and a London College of Music registered teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

I want my pupils to achieve the highest standards they can in all their musical activities, but most important of all I want all my pupils to experience the joy of playing an instrument and making music with others as I have throughout my life. I recognise that exams or classical music is not for everyone, and so I am more than happy to teach students who just want to "play for fun" and work on music that they want to play. Sometimes students decide that lessons are not for them, but even if this does happen, I consider even the briefest experience of music lessons can be life changing and can make someone think about music in a different way in the future. I particularly enjoy teaching adults who always bring another dimension to lessons. No two pupils are the same, and "one size" definitely does not "fit all" when teaching an instrument. As a teacher I continue to learn and develop my skills as I want to do my very best for my students.
