Personal Description:
I am a lifelong musician with varied tastes and interests, ranging from early music and traditional music to pop and rock. Besides being a musician I am a keen sportsman. Composition has become very important to me in recent years and both the National Youth Recorder Orchestra of Taipei and our own National Youth Recorder Orchestra have performed compositions of mine in the last year.
Tutoring Experience:
I taught in state schools for over 20 years and ran a very succesful music department in a Lincolnshire Grammar School for much of that time. I have helped many students to A level success and past students have gone on to study at Oxford and Cambridge and all the top music colleges. I now teach privately and only last year one of my students started his degree course at the Birmingham Conservatoire.
Tutoring Approach:
I suspect I would be viewed as mainly traditional in my approach to teaching, I believe that students should study theory alongside instrumental performance and that students should be encouraged to explore their instrument through composition.
Ensemble performance is very important to me and I make sure all my students are used to playing with someone else from early in their studies.
