Personal Description:

I have been a full time guitar teacher for 25 years and work in local schools and from my home in Ash. I offer lessons in both classical and popular music styles. I teach from beginner level through to advanced and regularly have pupils taking graded examinations. I have played as a session, classical guitarist and regularly perform at weddings and functions. One of my favourite pastimes is arranging songs for the classical guitar. These include Rock/pop songs, classical works and film music. I have also played in cover bands.

Tutoring Experience:

My tutoring has covered working in local state schools, local independent schools and working for the local education authority. Lessons have mostly been on a one to one basis but in schools many lessons have two pupils sharing and I have to adjust the lesson to help both pupils who will progress at different rates and have different musical needs. I also arrange music for use in guitar ensembles and prepare students for their GCSE music performances.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a varied approach to teaching as no two students are the same. It is important to understand what a student expects from their guitar lessons. Some may wish to focus solely on the Classical guitar style; Others on more contemporary styles. Classical players will begin by learning to play simple tunes on the Treble strings, and read the notes from standard notation. Don't worry if you can't read; I will cover this gradually in your lessons. Contemporary styles include the use of chords for song accompaniment and you will learn to use suitable strum patterns and also right hand finger patterns with which you can arpeggiate your chords. I have built up up a large and varied amount of guitar music in both tablature and standard notation which I can offer to pupils as they progress.
