Personal Description:
Rachel has been surrounded by music all her life, beginning on piano as a 5 year old. She attained a BA ( Hons ) Music from Leeds University 1st study clarinet, 2nd study piano but has also always had a passion for playing & performing jazz on saxophone, and doubling on flute for show performances.
Tutoring Experience:
With over 30 years experience of tutoring both Classical & Jazz idioms in state, private and further education, Rachel also runs various jazz ensembles/bands in schools, as well as gigging with a variety of ensembles from soul & folk rock bands, to open mic nights alongside songwriters. She also regularly works as an orchestral player primarily on clarinet, and doubling on sax and flute for various shows.
As a competent pianist, Rachel accompanies the majority of her students for their performance exams, as well as concerts. She offers lessons for younger players and those just starting out on the piano, up to intermediate level.
Tutoring Approach:
Rachel is passionate about teaching, and working with enthusiastic individuals to help them fulfil their potential; this may be a performance for a family member, or a Diploma exam!
She is a big believer in working towards a focus - during lessons Rachel will lay out clear strategies for practice, giving attainable goals to work towards to facilitate the learning process.
She regularly enters students for ABRSM (mainly classical) and Trinity (mainly jazz) exams but is equally content to work with musicians purely for pleasure.
As she also studied the piano, Rachel can offer students the pleasure of performing with accompaniments during lessons.
