I am a Masters student currently studying at the University of Manchester in Instrumental Composition. As a musician, I have played the trombone since the age of 10. I've got a vast range of experience in playing as a student, from local youth orchestras (Kent County Youth Orchestra) to orchestras around Manchester (Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra, Kaleidoscope Orchestra), to playing and writing music for jazz bands and groups (Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra, MSC Big Band). With some bands, I've played at music festivals across the U.K. and have a keen interest in jazz, soul and funk - I go to a lot of these gigs. I also used to play in a Klezmer band, and still do play in an Indian wedding function band which has been a great experience of playing in different cultures! Despite this, I studied under Rob Holliday (now sub-principal of the Royal Opera House in London) for two years and for a year with Blair Sinclair (Opera North), and so I have a vast understanding of modern and classical repertoire for the trombone.
As a composer, I write a range of music. I have studied under Kevin Malone and Philip Grange at Manchester University. With contemporary classical music I try to fuse my interest of neo-soul harmony and so my music is quite spatial and moves intricately between chords, involving a lot of layering. I have also experimented with chance and choice in my music! Personally, as a trombonist I do focus on brass, but I do have experience of writing for every ensemble! I am currently finishing two pieces - one for choir and one for extended jazz band using Charles Bukowski poetry read over the top! I have a lot of experience of arranging, especially for jazz ensembles (just from all my time spent in them!). Aside from this, I have a keen interest of composition in the other entertainment industries, and so I write for film and video games too. One film is currently doing the round of 16 film festivals and has many nominations so I can't wait to see how it turns out! I have a few video games currently in the working, in which I not only write the music but create all the sound design too! This means I have a decent understanding of not only instrumental, but technological composition too.
In Music: I have taught several students to grade 1 as part of a "grade1athon" competition (they all got distinctions!), and I have casually had several students that used to play and wanted to improve their tone and playing style. I have also led several composition workshops between myself and fellow students to analyse, interpret and improve each other's pieces.
Other: I regularly teach looked after children in secondary schools (this means I have CRB/DBS certification) in English and occasionally Maths. This is usually 1 on 1 or group sessions to help improve their skills and individual excellence in each subject.
My approach to music tuition follows very much what each student wants to do. I have found from my own personal experience that a person will work hardest at what they are most passionate about, so I strive to mould my tuition around each student's individual interests.
I set smaller goals for each student to achieve, to work towards larger goals and aims. My range of experience works well under this as I can very easily adapt to what each student may want to learn or study. I will set weekly tasks and work during each session to complete and homework, as the work needs to be done outside of lessons, so I can work on growth.
I'm always incredibly flexible, but ultimately I am there to help nurture and help grow each student's passion for music, and I will do my utmost best to achieve that!
