Personal Description:

I am a friendly and naturally encouraging teacher. I passed my Grade 8 piano exam in school and continued to study piano performance alongside composition at the University of Surrey.

I am DBS checked for my work in schools and registered on the update service.

I offer lessons in person at my flat on Bear Road and also online.

Tutoring Experience:

I've been teaching full time in schools for the last 7 years so I have a lot of experience teaching students ranging from absolute beginners up to Grade 8 level and have coached many students through grade exams. Being a singer and songwriter myself I also love to teach pop music performance and composition.

I've got several students that enjoy writing songs and we spend the lessons working on their compositions and recording them together on my computer using Logic Pro recording software.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is very important to learn music you want to learn so I base my lessons around each individual students preferences while taking into account their strengths and weaknesses and what specific aspects of their playing will benefit most from special attention. Grades can be a great way to inspire and challenge students but I don't consider them essential - as long as a student is inspired to practice at home every week then swift progress will surely follow!

For absolute beginners I like to work from books but a lot of the music I use is also pieces I have found or written out that I send to students to print before their lesson. For students that need a little bit more visual help between lessons I often make a video of myself playing their piece at the end of every lesson so they have that as a reference throughout the week.

I also have experience guiding and encouraging my private students to play in piano recitals. The recitals happen several times a year at Brighton Unitarian Church and I have had students as young as 5 years old take to the stage and perform by themselves.
