I'm a registered Drumsense Master tutor with 12 years teaching experience of all ages and abilities, I have a wide range of students from primary school children through to adults from all sorts of backgrounds including drummers who play in bands but who wish to take their drumming to a different level.
As well as the Drumsense programme I offer Rockschool grades, help with GCSE, A level or Diploma performance work, I also teach songs from all genres and styles and incorporate ensemble playing into the lessons as well.
I have played in many UK locations in a wide variety of styles such as Rock, Roots Reggae, Indie, Jazz Funk, Blues, Pop, Soul, Swing and performing in shows such as Midsummer’s Nights Dream. All through the years my enthusiasm for music is still as strong as is my love of seeing someone realise their dream of learning to play the drums.
Teaching the drums is my sole occupation and the best job I have ever had.
I have been running a busy private teaching practise for 12 years, within that time I have taught pupils from age 4 up to 65 and of all abilities. I have extensive knowledge of the Rockschool syllabus and many of my students have achieved grade 8 in drums, some have gone on to complete Diploma courses and a few are now on degree courses studying drum performance.
I also help students with school performances inculding preparation for the GCSE or A level music exams.
Many of my students have been and still are working adults who want to learn a new skill or are in bands and want to take their drumming to a different level.
My approach is the same for all of my students which is that learning the drums should be about playing musically and supportively. Lessons are at the students own pace and mindful of the fact that each student learns differently.
From the 1st lesson I cover phrasing using simple grooves and fills but students soon apply this principle in Blues, Funk, Jazz and Latin styles developing the use of rudiments and reading skills as we continue the journey.
• Grip –Stick & Pedal techniques – Sound.
• Listening – Musical awareness – Playing in time - Playing to a click.
• Phrasing – Song structure – Creating parts.
• Hi hat variations – Fill patterns & variations.
• Hands & feet 4 way independence.
• Styles – Rock/Funk/Jazz/Latin/Fusion.
• Chart reading – Rockschool grades – GCSE preparation.
• Ostinatos – Phrasing more complex patterns.
• Paradiddles – Alternative sticking – Everyday applications.
• Moeler method – Double & Buzz strokes – Rolls.
• Improvisation – Interpretation – Soloing.
I supplement lessons by accompanying on Guitar or Bass as needed as well as using a wide variety of backing tracks -
I also run the Rock & Rhythm Music School which is all about learning the necessary skills and a repertoire of songs to play Drums Bass or Guitar to so students understand ensemble playing and can more easily join or start a band.
