Personal Description:
Paula recently completed her music degree at the University of Bristol, majoring in Jazz Performance under the tuition of Emily Wright. Previously she received classical/operatic training with Matthew Best, Clare Griffel and Susan Choi. She is a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and has a DBS check.
Throughout her university experience, Paula sang with the University Singers, the University Chamber Choir and Scola Cantorum. In her second year she also performed in Holst's 'The Wandering Scholar' and Bernstein's 'Candide'.
Paula sings in a Neo-Soul band with whom she has performed at venues such as The Crofter's Rights, Cafe Kino and The Jam Jar. She can also help pupils master the technique of performance and stage presence.
Before coming to University she undertook 12 years of lessons in pop and classical piano and participated in numerous competitions.
She also composes and writes her own music. Paula is fluent in English, French and German. This is a very crucial skill for singers, as techniques vary a lot when singing in different languages. She can also help with Italian pronunciation.
Tutoring Experience:
Paula has been teaching singing and piano since finishing University.
She was lucky to have good tutors throughout University who gave her guidance and good insight into the art of teaching music.
Tutoring Approach:
Paula believes that following the learner's curiosity and interests brings the most exciting results. Forcing a person to sing or play when they are not in the right frame of mind can be a very negative experience, especially for children. She tries to build trust with the pupil and create a safe space in which making music together is easy and inspiring.
Paula believes that practicing is key to making progress, so she will strongly encourage the pupil to do so.
