Information About Paul - Thirsk teacher

Personal Description:

I am a trained classical musician. I have been playing the piano since I was seven, and have also played violin, flute and guitar. I graduated from Durham University in 1985 with an MA in composition, and worked for many years at EMI's Abbey Road Studios. I now have my own music production business.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught piano since 2006, covering all abilities from starter through to grade 8. In the early years 30 minutes is usually sufficient time, rising to an hour (or at least 45 minutes) at grade 5 standard. I coach all my students for grade 5 theory, and beyond if they wish. I teach music production and composition at Leeds College of Music, and also help some of my piano pupils.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very personable and easy to get on with. Above all, learning has to be fun, and with no fear of making mistakes. Technique is hugely important of course, and we always practice scales and sight reading. However, I also spend time showing pupils how to create their own music; how to listen, how chords work etc.
