Personal Description:
I'm a Bo'ness based musician with over thirty years experience playing multiple instruments, beginning formal training at the age of four with the violin. Changing to viola around age nine, I also played lower brass instruments for seven years (Tuba/Euphonium) whilst singing in choirs all the time. In my early teens, my interests shifted to the world of rock and jazz and I began teaching myself instruments by ear (Guitar, bass, drums, keyboards). It was from this point that music really started to make sense and come alive for me. The process of learning was; listening to music I loved and trying to play along, developing skills in improvisation and songwriting from the start, the process followed b**Contact Detail Removed**ge percentage of people who wrote the songs we know and love…
Tutoring Experience:
I have over ten years experience tutoring freelance (one on one) and an additional one year teaching a group guitar lesson (8 children and 2 teachers) once a week for a local charity. I'm comfortable teaching all ages and abilities and have experience working with Neurodiverse children and adults. Most of my experience has been in-person tuition, these days I'm mixing in some online classes also. I've guided a number of students through ABRSM and Trinity exams but am equally happy to avoid music notation entirely and focus entirely on learning by ear.
Tutoring Approach:
I always try to meet the student where they're at in their musical journey, finding out any genres/composers/bands of particular interest and then tailoring the lessons to individual needs. Lessons can be as formal or fun (or both!) as you like. My belief is that everyone has an inner-musician waiting to be helped outward. The good news is that if you're thinking about learning music, chances are that music has affected you (or spoken to you) in some meaningful way already. Music is everywhere, you have already assimilated a huge part of its structures into your brain without knowing it, just by listening to it.
