I have been playing guitar professionally for 10 years and have just finished studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire for a Masters Degree in Jazz performance, where I studied with Mike Outram and Hannes Riepler. I have extensive performance experience in a range of different styles, having played throughout the U.K, Europe, South America and the Caribbean.
I have 8 years teaching experience both as a peripatetic and private guitar tutor. I have previously taught at Lewisham College and Trinity School in Hither Green.
My approach to tuition is tailored to the needs of my students. I have many ideas and concepts for students who want to take their guitar playing to the next level, whether you are a beginner or at an advanced level. I also have experience taking students through graded exams, and for applying to College/University auditions.
For students who are new to the instrument, I like to teach mostly by learning songs. This way, the student can work on every aspect of their guitar playing at once, including: chords (open/barre chords), learning repertoire, rhythm and technique (strumming/using a plectrum/fingerpicking), learning chord symbols, and developing their ear to hear harmony (a very important skill for all musicians). Over time, if the student decides to pursue graded exams, we work on reading music, learning Major, Minor and Pentatonic scales, and linking music theory to our instrument.
For intermediate students, we learn 7th chords by learning more complicated songs. We also explore scales by learning to improvise.
Here are some of the subjects I teach to advanced students:
- Jazz/Rock/Blues Improvisation
- Advanced harmony (functional and non-functional harmony)
- Scales (Major modes, Melodic/Harmonic Minor modes, pentatonics, Diminished Scale)
- Ear training (how to recognise intervals, chord types, chord progressions)
For advanced students who perhaps wish to audition for music schools, we discuss what the school's entry criteria is and work towards meeting it.
For my students who play guitar purely as a hobby, we usually discuss what we are going to do in the first lesson and make a plan to suit their wants and needs.
