Personal Description:

Graduate of The University of Edinburgh, I am a freelance teacher, trumpeter, conductor and composer based in Edinburgh.

As trumpeter, I have performed with over twenty orchestras in Scotland, England, the Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium and Poland. My orchestral repertoire highlights include Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (performed at Dundee’s Caird Hall), Firebird, Mahler 1, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and Gershwin’s An American in Paris (performed with solos at the Usher Hall). I am a prize-winner at national brass competitions, have performed at international festivals like Jazz Festival Litvinov, and Lipa Musica, and have recorded CDs. With my colleagues, we established the Bristo Brass Quintet with which we perform regularly in venues like St Cecilia’s, Reid Concert Hall and Greyfriars Kirk. One of my upcoming projects involves performing Mahler’s Second symphony at the McEwan hall.

As conductor, I hold principal conductorship with Edinburgh University Music Society (EUMS) Sinfonia, a full-sized symphony orchestra; principal conductorship with VoiceArc, an Edinburgh-based opera company; and musical directorship with Edinburgh University Brass Band (EUBB). As assistant to conductor Lutz de Veer (Nürenberg) and director Marcin Lakomicki (Staatsoper Berlin) at the Berlin Opera Academy, I performed Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at the OpernFest in Berlin. Among other ensembles, I have worked with Edinburgh University String (EUSO), and Chamber Orchestras. To the present day, I have been given several prizes and bursaries for conducting, most recently the Roderick Brydon memorial award; and have given concerts in Scotland, England, Spain, Latvia, Germany and the Czech Republic. There, I also took EUMS for its 150th anniversary tour. I made my Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut with Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in the festival’s 70th edition. In 2019, I will be assisting J. Livsey (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and Gidon Saks (Staatsoper Berlin) on a Berlin production of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena.

As composer, I was a finalist in the Maurice Ravel International Composition Competition with my work Reverie for Solo Trumpet. With EUBB, I premiered and CD recorded my A Balkanic Eruption alongside other works. My work Pitch Black has been premiered at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Interconnect event. Moreover, I am an avid supporter of other people’s new music and have been extensively involved in organising and conducting composition competitions for EUBB and EUSO.

Tutoring Experience:

I have experience teaching a variety of ages (5-60), and abilities (beginner to advanced). Regarding graded music exams, students have a choice to study with me for graded exams on Trumpet, and Music theory. Also, I prepare students for Scottish Highers, Advanced Highers, A level and IB exams. During the lessons, I can accompany my students on piano (depending on the music) for no extra charge. I also have links with many pianists in Edinburgh who could accompany them in performances and exams.

My broad experience enables me to cater to each student individually. This experience comes from having studied with some of the top players, conductors, composers and musicians in the industry (see About below). This means I can offer a range of approaches to technique and teaching itself based on the needs of my students.

Past teachers & masterclass professors
- Trumpet: Peter Franks (Scottish Chamber Orchestra), Jaroslav Halír, Jirí Šedivý (both Czech Philharmonic), and Thomas Gansch (Mnozil Brass)
- Conducting: Jorma Panula, Kenneth Kiesler (UMich), Atso Almila (Sibelius Academy), Clark Rundell and Mark Heron (both RNCM)
- Composition: Prof Peter Nelson (Edinburgh University), Marijn Simons (LA Phil & others), and Gareth Williams (Scottish Opera)

Tutoring Approach:

In my lessons, I make sure there is a good balance between variety and in-depth study. I also take particular care to adapt a lesson to a particular student on a particular day. In general, a part of the lesson will be dedicated to technique and another part to studying and interpreting a work. I encourage students to suggest works they themselves want to study but I do also recommend works. In preparation for Scottish Highers and other school exams, we focus on whatever the student needs help with most, while regularly revisiting other areas.

*For trumpeters* (and brass players): In the first part, there could be breathing exercises, tonguing, slurring etc.; and working on a solo work, an orchestral part or another work in the second part (even playing Star Wars with a CD!).
Extra: There is a possibility to play chamber music with me and/or other students should the students desire. There would be no extra charge for this as they would take place in a lesson. Also, there may be a possibility for the more advanced students to join the Edinburgh University Brass Band where I am Musical Director.

*For conductors*: The first part could involve baton technique, posture, a range of expressions depending on the music etc.; and approaching specific problems in traditional repertoire in the second part or working on music the student wants to study.
Extra: In addition to our lessons, my students can come to my rehearsals to sit there with a score and observe (for FREE). Directly after the rehearsal, they can ask questions with a possibility to further discuss the rehearsal in a lesson. Furthermore, there is a possibility of organising sessions with players so that the student gets to conduct what they prepared in lessons. For further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Availability & Spaces
I am flexible with lesson times and spaces. I don't have a problem travelling even to more distant parts of Edinburgh or outside, however, there may be an additional charge to reflect travel costs and time. Nevertheless, I am very open about discussing options and teaching on weekends is not a problem for me. I can also access rehearsal spaces in central Edinburgh but their availability needs planning in advance.
