Personal Description:

Hi! I'm Olivia, a recorder player currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Here's a bit about me:

Born and raised in Cambridge, Olivia currently studies recorder at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Ian Wilson, having studied previously with Anna Stegmann, and studies baroque bassoon with Peter Whelan. She has won multiple solo competitions, both nationally and internationally, in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Through being a member of Aldeburgh Young Musicians (2012-2018), she has enjoyed performances such as at Central Hall in Westminster as part of BBC2 Holocaust Memorial 2012 and as part of the Snape Proms with London-based world music collective Lokkhi Terra. More recently she has enjoyed performing in ENO’s Olivier award-nominated production of Noye’s Fludde, recording for Disney at Abbey Road, performances at the Barbican’s Sound Unbound Festival 2019, and performances of John Blow’s Venus and Adonis in Milton Court Theatre, directed by Victoria Newlyn. Olivia also plays recorder in her contemporary-folk trio Nimba, and previously was a founding member of 6-piece folk group Prebula.
Since living in London, Olivia has begun workshop-leading, in London with her workshop team Songrise Workshops and as part of the Wigmore Hall’s ‘Chamber Tots’ scheme with her recorder quintet. Further afield, she works with The Wind-Up Penguin Theatre Company, a charity that takes music theatre shows and workshops to disadvantaged children around the world, through which she went to Greece in Summer 2019. This coming Summer she will continue this work in refugee camps in Turkey.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught privately on a casual basis through my time as a student, and more recently have run music and theatre workshops with charity "The Wind-Up Penguin Theatre Company", and also co-run a workshop team based in London alongside three other students, through which we go into schools and community setting and run music workshops.

I am happy to teach any ages!

As a child, I took exams in both the ABRSM and Trinity exam boards, so I am well adept at understanding the requirements for preparing for exams, should that be a path the student wishes to take.

However, a lot of my personal musical learning in my teenage years was by ear, and without music in front of me. This is something I believe was hugely formative to the development of my musical ear and has helped me hugely up until now and continues to do so, so I always like to encourage this in my students wherever possible too. This means of course that it is no problem to have a student who doesn't wish to learn with music, or who is not yet reading music themselves.
