Personal Description:

My teaching practice is based in Maidenhead, where my piano pupils range from post-grade 4 to post LRSM and include all ages from 8 to nearly 80. Formerly a senior producer for BBC Radio 3, I now work mainly as a pianist, teacher, examiner and adjudicator. For the last twenty years, private teaching has been a major part of my life.

I specialise in upper grade and diploma preparation and have prepared almost 100 pupils for grade 8 and taken a further fifty through diplomas (ARSM, dipABRSM, LRSM, ATCL and LTCL). I hold an enhanced DBS, and am a Fellow of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (FISM) and an Honorary Associate of the Royal Acedemy of Music in addition to my professional qualifications.

Tutoring Experience:

I specialise in upper grade and diploma preparation and have prepared almost 100 pupils for grade 8 and taken a further fifty through diplomas (ARSM, dipABRSM, LRSM, ATCL and LTCL).

For over twenty years I was a diploma and grade examiner for the ABRSM, examining throughout the UK and abroad.

I have also worked extensively as an external examiner at the Royal Academy of Music (2001 –05, 2012 -17 & 2020-23), the Royal College of Music (2006 – 10, 2016-17 and 2020-23) and the Royal Northern College of Music (2012 –15).

Tutoring Approach:

My experience as a performer, teacher and examiner has given me a deep understanding of what achieving at a high level demands, but above all an appreciation of the pleasure that playing the piano to the best of your ability brings.
