Michael BMus (Hons) is a professional musician based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a Henri Selmer Paris Performing Artist, and D'Addario Woodwinds Performing Artist. Since studying at the junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he has enjoyed a richly varied freelance career as a performer and educator. Upon graduation, Mike was appointed Chairman and Principal Baritone of the National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain. His work with this ensemble included several world premiere performances, TV appearances, and leading the group in their tours of China, Holland, Thailand, and their appearance at the Prague Fringe Festival.
Mike was Assistant Director of the highly acclaimed 16th World Saxophone Congress, hosted in St Andrews, Scotland. This triennial international festival featured over 1000 musicians and delegates from all over the world, and as principal organiser Mike oversaw the production of more than 250 performances in just five days. Mike has also performed at WSCs in Thailand, Slovenia, and France.
As a chamber musician, Mike is a member of the Scottish Saxophone Ensemble (Made In Scotland Showcase 2013), and the Apollo Saxophone Orchestra (whose recent ‘Perpetual Motion’ album featured new works by Barbara Thompson). He was a founder of Quadrophonia, the first wind group ever to reach the final of the St Martin in-the-Fields Chamber Music competition, and winners of 2011 Clarinet And Saxophone Society of Great Britain’s Saxophone Quartet competition.
Other collaborations have seen Mike produce Soprillogy (the world’s first soprillo saxophone album), perform with the London Saxophonic at the Sicilian EtnaFest, and feature on recordings and in live performances with Emma Pollock (The Delgados) and Eugene Twist. He gigs regularly with prog/fusion outfit Slow Gear, and Glasgow based A-Side Soul.
Notable performances include sell-out appearances at multiple Edinburgh Fringe and Jazz Festivals, the Enterprise Music Scotland Chamber Music Festival, the SOUND Festival, the Prague Fringe Festival, the British Saxophone Congress, and several Royal Northern College of Music Saxophone Days. Mike has also performed across the UK through Yehudi Menuin's ‘Live Music Now!’ scheme, and has featured on television broadcasts for BBC1 and ITV, and on BBC Radio Scotland, XFM, BBC Radio 3, and BBC Radio 6 Music.
In high demand as an educator, Mike is saxophone tutor for Napier University and Edinburgh University, and enjoys a successful private teaching practice. He has taught at St Andrews University, St Mary's Music School, and further work with Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative has seen Mike visit schools across West Lothian and Aberdeenshire as a tutor on their award-winning Jazz Programme. Mike is a founder and manager of the Scottish Saxophone Academy.
Mike is a co-Director of Transgressive North, an arts collective which has collaborated with many artists including Jarvis Cocker, Four Tet, Son Lux, Irvine Welsh, Owen Pallett, Deerhoof, Sheila Stewart, and Alexander McCall Smith. As well as their multi award-winning films Blackbird (Scottish BAFTA nominated) and When the Song Dies, Trangressive North are proud to have produced the highly acclaimed outreach-multimedia project, Everything Is New. As a member of Marram, Transgressive North’s in-house band, Mike and his colleagues released their debut album Sun Choir to critical acclaim:

I'm an experienced, professional musician and teacher based in central Edinburgh. Whether you wish to pass grade exams or simply learn some good tunes, I'm more than happy to help you achieve your goal! All ages and abilities are more than welcome.
I have an excellent record of entering pupils for the ABRSM exam syllabus, with 100% merit and distinction level passes. I can also prepare pupils for all levels of the current SQA requirements.
I'm a member of the PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland, and am covered by Public Liability Insurance.
