Information About Matthew - Dulwich teacher

Personal Description:

I am an inter-disciplinary cellist, with experience working in a broad range of classical, pop and contemporary music. I studied at Goldmsiths University, which gave me alternative ways of thinking about and teaching music. I grew up with a classical background, singing in a Cathedral Choir and learning the cello, playing in orchestras and chamber ensembles including the Kent County Youth Orchestra where I was principle cellist for my last 3 years as a member. I am now continuing to study with a professor from Guildhall, where I hope to undertake a Masters in the future.

Tutoring Experience:

I tutored privately in voice and cello in my home town for two years before I moved to London, where I took a break to focus on my own learning. I am a visiting cover tutor for ArtsOne Education for their Saturday "Rock School" music programme.

Tutoring Approach:

My primary focus is on performance and musicality; achieving cognitive embodiment of your practice. By applying proper technique, using our ears and developing a personal connection to the music we play, we can reach a state where our performance becomes fully embodied, as if it were part of or an extension of ourselves. The way we approach this will be up to the tutee, as I prefer to be more and student-lead in my teaching (think guidance over discipline). Learning any instrument is a long and winding journey, I believe it is important to enjoy as much of it as possible!
