Personal Description:
I have been playing guitar since I was 11 years old and I am largely self-taught. I took piano lessons and theory lessons up to grade 6 as a child and teenager, but my love of the guitar took over and that is what I have concentrated on since I was about 16.
I have played in bands throughout my life, and have recorded several albums. I still write songs and record. But I also love to teach.
I live in East Dulwich, South London with my wife and two children.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching part-time since 2007, and am now aiming to increase my teaching hours.
I have taught both adults and children, and have used the popular RGT/London College of Music acoustic guitar syllabus for students wishing to take exams.
I have taken several of my students all the way through the grades from 1 to 8, and my students have generally received good marks - always a Merit or a Distinction.
I do not have formal training as a teacher, but I think I am a pretty good one!
Tutoring Approach:
I am an enthusiastic and experienced guitar teacher, and am happy to teach both children and adults. I am available on all weekdays, 9.00am to 7pm, online, or in person in the Dulwich area.
I specialise in rock and pop, blues and folk styles for both acoustic and electric guitar.
I read music notation fluently and I also use 'tab', but I particularly enjoy playing by ear, and I try to encourage this skill as much as possible in my lessons.
Enjoyment is always the key and I try to tailor my lessons to the interests and skills of the student. Exams are entirely optional - the exam syllabuses I have used provide a great structure for learning and progressing, but are not the only way to move forward. I particularly enjoy helping students to develop their own creativity - to write songs or tunes, and even to record them (using Soundtrap or Garageband).
