Personal Description:
Studied at The Royal Academy Of Music, Royal College Of Music (Advanced Composition under the eminent composer Philip Cannon), and finally completed a PhD in Composition at The University Of Surrey. Other qualifications include G Mus (Dist.), LRAM (piano teacher) and LMus Tcl (music theory). Apart from teaching, play in Care Homes and other venues (organised by agent Mac Entertainments). Have music for children published by Boosey & Hawkes and OUP. Past compositional achievements include Joint winner of Huddersfield Young Composer Competition, and only British composer featured in "Festivale Internacionale de nuovo musice" with String Quartet No.3. Music has been broadcast on Radio Bremen as part of The Delmenhorst Festival.
Tutoring Experience:
Apart from personal creative projects, I have been active since student days as a teacher of piano and, as qualifications were accrued, theory and composition tuition were added. More latterly, I have come to teach violin as well, but in early grades only as this was a Third Study for me when a student. I have assisted students with their compositions both at GCSE and A level, and have taught piano upto Diploma ABRSM level. I give all lessons in the Tutee's home, and parents are welcome to sit in if desired.
Tutoring Approach:
I find a sense of humour very important. I always try to keep tuition, although focused, informal as well. I have taught all levels and abilities, and whilst only a few have made a career out of music (most recently a 15 year old gained Distinction in Grade 8, and then went on to gain a 2:1 B Mus from Nottingham… she came back for a criticism lesson), I have kept in touch with many. I count it as a compliment that years later, I still get Christmas cards.
