Personal Description:

I have been playing the ukulele since 2004 and it is the only instrument I play – unless you include the kazoo! It quickly became an obsession and still is but I now enjoy passing on what I've learnt. All in all, a lot of fun. And that's the thing about ukuleles –

Fun to learn
Fun to play
Easier learning curve means you gain a real sense of your improvement
A great confidence builder
Fun to perform for family and friends
Great way to make new friends
An ideal first instrument no matter what your age. You really are never too old (or young) to learn.
Could be a stepping stone to other instruments.

Left- or right-handed, you have a chord hand and a strumming hand so I am happy to teach either way. I am left-handed and play the ukulele left-handed. As most people are right-handed I believe this benefits right-handers because you will see a mirror image during my lesson. Right-handers have told me they find this helps them.

My enhanced CRB check (February 2012) is for working with vulnerable adults only and is not connected with ukulele teaching or children.

I have plenty of qualifications - but in relation to ukuleles & music – absolutely none. My enthusiasm to see you get pleasure from playing your ukulele is my qualification. However, I gained the PTLLS qualification for teaching adults in July 2013.

Tutoring Experience:

I started private 1-to-1 tutoring in late 2010. My current experience is mostly with adults but younger pupils have picked up playing very quickly.

Tutoring Approach:

Ukuleles are simply fun to play and you will have fun learning the basics without the heavy theory and exercises that other instruments can require. You will surprise yourself how quickly you improve.

My aim is simply to get you started and over that initial 'hump' that any new hobby has. Too often people buy a beginners' DVD or book with their ukulele and struggle because you don't get any feedback from them. And that can be frustrating. You often need someone to say, "How about if you try this… That may help you." My job is to nudge you in a helpful direction and help you explore your own growing ability. What eventual path you take is up to you and your own level of interest and practice. My lessons are flexible and I take them at your pace.

My musical interests are varied and have grown since discovering the ukulele. I cover country, rock, pop, comedy, blues, showtunes, children's, 20s, 30s, 40s – the list is endless. I will start you off with my own suggestions but you are very welcome to suggest your own as we progress.
