Personal Description:

My name is Louis and I am a musician based in LB Newham. My guitar playing is based around electric guitar and I can perform many styles in genres such as rock, soul, funk, jazz, and pop.

Music is central to everything I do. As a teenager I had little interest in school, but then I picked up the guitar and found an identity in music. This changed my life and turned it around, even leading me to achieve an MA (distinction, 2018) in Music Composition and Ba Hons (1st class, 2013) in Popular Music & Recording from University of Salford. Prior to my university studies I gained a Grade 8 with distinction (Rock School) for electric guitar at the first grade exam I attempted. I have extensive performing experience gained through 6 years (2014-20) as lead guitarist in a 5-piece band that performed at functions around the Northwest, which furnished me with valuable experience of musical accuracy, the condensed learning of multiple songs, and ability to participate with a high degree of improvisation. I also gained experience of the set-up and take-down of music and lighting rigs before and after the shows.

Tutoring Experience:

During and following my part-time Masters studies I worked for 6 years part-time at Droylsden Academy in Manchester, where I taught guitar, composition, performance and recording to pupils in Years 7-11. This was both through one-to-one sessions and in small groups. I helped to prepare students for their grade exams and with GCSE coursework using programs including Logic Pro and Ableton. I also worked as a teaching assistant in the Music Tech class where I helped students with coursework and exam topics including music production, synthesis, foley art, and studio composition.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone should be offered the chance to learn an instrument, sing or participate in music. This is not only to develop skills that will enhance their life, but also to promote wellbeing, encourage collaboration and bring people with similar interests together.

I will always get to know the student, see what interests them and what they want from their lessons, whether it be academic, practice-based or just casual playing in music.
