Personal Description:

I'm passionate about playing, writing music, and sharing the process with others. I'm primarily a jazz pianist and composer/songwriter, but I also love playing the music of the great classical composers and I love the diversity of different styles of music from all around the world.

I have a first-class honours bachelor's degree in Jazz Saxophone, and 10+ years of experience as a professional musician. I have performed in bands, and recorded as a session musician, at festivals, venues and studios across the country, including Ronnie Scott's and Abbey Road. Since graduation from university I have also been immersed in teaching, both privately, and in schools around the south-east. I play both piano and sax to grade 8+ standard. I hold an up-to-date enhanced child workforce DBS check.

Tutoring Experience:

I have years of experience running my own teaching practice and I work five days a week as a peripatetic piano teacher in schools throughout West Sussex. The majority of my students are currently children age 5-11, although I also have lots of experience teaching teens and adults. Many of my students have passed the ABRSM jazz and classical grades with flying colours.

Tutoring Approach:

I think of my lessons as music lessons, rather than just piano lessons. I cover all aspects of music. One of my favourite aspects of teaching music is discovering, together with a student, how various elements - including technique, rhythm, harmony, theory, aural, etc, work together to create the unique character of a piece of music.

My teaching curriculum is not limited to 'the grades' although many of my students do take the exams and are encouraged to do so when the time is right. My students are encouraged to improvise, compose, and learn a whole range of music that is not geared towards exams. Music is so much more than a series of exams, and the best possible reward is to gain a deep level of enjoyment from playing an instrument.

You will not find me chiding or punishing students for making mistakes. There are always more constructive approaches to overcoming hurdles. I do expect my students to practice regularly, but this can take on many forms depending on the student's natural way of learning and their schedule.
