Prior to my post graduate studies at the Royal College of Music, I gained a First Class Honours Degree in Music from Royal Holloway College University of London and I currently work as a freelance singer and teacher. Some of my most recent professional engagements have been with Opera Holland Park, The Philharmonia Chorus and the BBC.
My main skill is opera singing, but I also have a lot of experience in jazz and musical theatre. I really enjoy being flexible and versatile in my teaching and many of my principles are relevant to all kinds of singing, such as breath control, projection, musicality and confidence. I have taught all ages ranging from 14 to 50 years old and am equally at home teaching different styles.
Piano and Music Theory:
I have a lot of experience teaching piano and music theory to younger learners. In the early stages of learning the piano, basic music theory such as note values and time signatures is easily incorporated into lessons, but I'm very happy to provide separate theory tutoring to anyone looking to pass Grade 5 theory (a necessity when wanting to pursue any other instrument above grade 5).
I always start my lessons with breathing exercises to relax, ground and build strength for the individual. Then it's important for me to gauge your voice type and potential, so I like to begin with some basic vocal exercises to get a sense of your range, quality and what sort of styles you might suit (if you're not sure where you want to begin).
It's helpful if you have a keyboard (especially if you want to work on classical singing) but not obligatory and I have a lot of experience teaching without one. I can also incorporate some basic music reading and keybord skills into our lessons if desired.
Whether you want to work towards an audition or grade, or if you just want to be better at karaoke when you get the chance, I would love to help you get there and achieve your singing goals!
Piano and Music Theory:
I believe it's very important to do your scales as a pianist, but it's just as important to be working on fun pieces all the time so you can see your technical skills come to life! Lessons will always involve some warming up and technical exercises, followed by work on specific pieces, whether it's just for fun or for a particular grade. Music theory can be incorported into much of piano learning, but separate tutoring will involve both written and aural exercises which can then be applied to your piano practice!
