Personal Description:

I am a mature student studying music at the University of Nottingham. I have a deep passion for all things related to music, the reason I chose my course is that it covers a very broad range of music-related topics.
I have grade eight piano and also play guitar, bass guitar, saxophone and accordion (I try to play every instrument I can get my hands on!).
I have experience singing and conducting choirs and playing different instruments in chamber groups and rock bands whilst at university.
Unlike most people, I love music theory and analysis, having discovered my fascination for it late during my time at school. I therefore had to teach myself music theory from scratch, using books and limited online resources.
I believe my favourite classical music is by French composers, I love works by L. Boulanger, Ravel, Debussy and Messiaen.
In my spare time I run a social media account that recommends my followers a different work of classical music every day.

Tutoring Experience:

I have thorough experience of music theory exam preparation, having taught myself the syllabus and putting myself through the exams. I am therefore intimately acquainted with the up-to-date syllabus and content of the course.
I have tutored friends and bandmates on music theory for months and have tutored neighbours (in GCSE subjects etc) for years. I enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge of music with others and would like to do so with more people.
I have experience working with children of all age ranges, having worked in summer schools for the past four years. I have therefore learned to be engaging and patient, as well as having improved my communication skills.
I also have a certified DBS certificate, which I consistently renew when it is outdated.

Tutoring Approach:

My objective is to provide anyone who needs it the chance to study music theory, as I believe it has many useful applications and is essential for those who want to play an instrument to higher grade or study music in further education. Because of this, I want to offer students affordable lessons and exam preparation, as it is something that I didn’t have access to when I began studying music.
My teaching style is flexible and tailored to the abilities and knowledge of the student. In the initial lesson I will ascertain what parts of the syllabus the student is familiar with and build up from there. We will work through exercises and exam questions, covering everything that is necessary for the exam. I will teach in line with the syllabuses of ABRSM or Trinity (depending on which board the student will go with), using exam board approved books and other resources to shape my teaching. Unless it is unwanted, I will provide my students with work to take away with them to complete outside of the lesson, which I can then mark and provide feedback for. I am also happy to provide casual music theory lessons to people who just want to learn more about it.
