Personal Description:

Kauri is a Japanese/Kiwi violinist and teacher, recently moved to London. She has a passion for education, having started teaching the violin to other children in her neighbourhood from the age of 14. Kauri takes great joy in teaching others violin, believing that not only is she teaching the instrument itself, but she is fostering an encouraging environment for creativity, experimentation, learning, and perseverance. She is also happy to teach violin in Japanese as well as English.

Kauri graduated from the University of Waikato with First Class Honours in violin performance this year, and has a Postgraduate Diploma in violin performance with Distinction. She also completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering with First Class Honours at the University of Auckland in 2019. With her backgrounds in both the arts and sciences, she has a unique approach to teaching, incorporating both methodological problem-solving and creative thinking in her lessons.

Tutoring Experience:

Having realised she loves teaching from when she began showing her baby sister how to play the violin, Kauri has continued spreading her love of music and now enjoys doing it professionally. Before moving to London this year, she was a full-time itinerant teacher in Auckland, New Zealand, teaching at several schools, including:

- Baradene College of the Sacred Heart
- Good Shepherd Primary School
- Marist Primary School
- Mount Albert Grammar School
- Saint Dominic's Primary School
- Saint Peter's College

Kauri also has 10 years of experience teaching privately, from introductory level to grade 8.

Tutoring Approach:

With her multi-disciplinary background, Kauri has formed a compassionate, patient, and encouraging teaching method. This includes bits and bobs from her biomedical engineering degree, and how physics plays a role in music-making and sound waves; her 15 years of ballet and contemporary dance training, linking to the importance of mind-muscle connection and how to play violin without stress and strain; her Suzuki Method violin training, and how your ears are your biggest ally when it comes to practising.

Central to this multi-disciplinary approach to teaching is patience, kindness, encouragement, and curiosity. Kauri believes that these four pillars are what produces a learning environment with zero judgement that allows for creativity to flow - which is what brought her to love music, and hopes that it will be what brings others to love music too.
