Personal Description:
My empathic and caring nature coupled with many years of experience teaching people of all ages and from all walks of life, ensures that you will receive a person-centred teaching programme tailored to your individual needs. I believe that humour, the ability to be flexible and a well thought out teaching environment all play an important part in making the learning process stimulating and enjoyable.
My life experience to date means that I have developed a 'wise' mind and an ability to reflect upon and improve my practice. The art of good teaching is about being able to transmit ideas, knowledge and skills in a such way that they can be understood and acquired with little effort on the part of the tutee, often subliminally. It is a gift, one that I feel I have nurtured and developed throughout my adult life.
I am a qualified and fully registered Music Therapist and an experienced practitioner in this field.
Tutoring Experience:
I have a 22 year career as a primary school teacher, specialising in the teaching of music.
My experience in instrumental tuition spans 25 years.
In my work as a Music Therapist, I worked a lot with individuals who wanted to sing and developed the art of teaching vocal skills through this and through attending various courses and workshops on the teaching of singing and how to lead choirs. I am a member of the Natural Voice Practitioner's network and also lead a small choir in my local community.
Tutoring Approach:
I am person-centred in my approach and adopt a flexible approach to teaching which takes into account the individual's age, personality and particular needs and wishes. I have had much success over the years in engaging both children and adults in the process of learning an instrument and have sustained many a successful working relationship making the learning process both stimulating and fun, using a variety of methods and resources.

However I have written my own songs over the years and felt it was my last chance to see if I could perform these songs at least to a reasonable level.
Katherine immediately understood my situation and somehow made me feel much less out of my depth than I thought I would be. She immediately told me my main problem and we set about re-learning general good singing techniques.
This culminated in me being able to perform one of my songs at a small gathering which gave me a great deal of confidence to carry on.
I now feel that I understand my own voice and try to sing within my capabilities.
The proof of the pudding for me is that I have had much better comments from people around me and I feel prepared at last to perform the rest of my songs which was always the plan.
I owe this all to Katherine who has helped me through this transition without once making me feel like it would be beyond me.
Thank you Katherine
See you on the 25th, Katherine
Kind regards,
Katherine
I have attended two sessions so far, and each time I leave, I feel my spirit lifted. I have already learnt so much about the technicalities of the voice and where my own voice comfortably sits.
The hour session goes quickly but is filled with enjoyment and newness each time… I would recommend Katherine to anyone who would like to find their voice, improve their singing, and learn more about the helpfulness of the breath. Thank you.
