Personal Description:

My name is Karla, and I am a soprano from Scotland, now based in London. Over the past 6 years I have studied Vocal Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a BMus First Class Honours and a Masters degree with an ABRSM Diploma in teaching. I love music, specifically singing, and I’ve been immersed in music and singing activities my whole life. In most recent years I’ve invested most of my time in developing my own skills as a solo singer. While that’s always been a dream of mine I also want to be able to share my skills and experience with others because I have been so lucky to learn from some amazing teachers who inspired me to do my teaching qualification so that I could inspire other people to sing. I believe that everyone has the potential to sing, they just have to learn how to use their voice, train their ear, but believing that they can is a huge part of it.

Tutoring Experience:

I completed musicianship training in Kodaly as part of The National Youth Choir of Scotland and at the RCS, where I taught small group workshops for young people. I also worked for the Transitions 20/40 Scheme at the RCS where I had the opportunity of teaching students one-to-one privately and leading group workshops. Asides from these experiences, I taught a few students privately throughout my conservatoire studies but now as a freelancer I am looking to grow my teaching studio. I enjoy teaching as I find students curiosity and interest contagious and I find that while teaching you are also learning yourself how to be a better singer and teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

My overall aim when teaching is to strengthen the students voice while keeping optimal vocal health. I do this by creating fun, dynamic vocal exercises that creates a free sound and gets to the core of the students true voice. I am flexible to each students working pace and adapt to the way that they work best. I strive to get the highest possible standard out of each student while creating an encouraging and inspiring environment for them to learn in. I set achievable targets with the student so they have a goal to work towards. I always suggest singing music that inspires and creates a feeling of excitement in the student, something they love singing as this will remind them of why they started singing. However I do make sure that the music choices are well within the students capability to create a sense of achievement while challenging them to improve at the same time. While I’m early in my journey as a teacher I am certain that I can provide these qualities. Ultimately, I am here to serve the student and help them learn and get the most out of their lessons.
