Personal Description:

Born in Holland, I began playing the cello at a young age. Early on I developed a free, autonomous and creative personality.

After completing my undergraduate diploma in The Netherlands, I moved to England where I achieved a postgraduate degree at the Royal College of Music in London.

I enjoy playing private chamber music concerts and teaching a varied group of both young and old cello students. It has been great to connect with people online, doing practice sessions as well as one to one cello lessons. I have started to write down my thoughts in the form of a little book on what I think and do to stay mindful and with excitement for learning on my cello.

Tutoring Experience:

Over 15 Years experience in teaching the cello to both children and adults beginners but mostly further advanced student.

Parents comment:

Julia is an excellent musician and equally gifted communicator. She is able to enthuse without coercion and to respond to her pupils as individuals. I greatly value that she's taken my son as he is and inspired him.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching has at its core a simple philosophy: any student I meet is a unique individual whom I want to listen to and observe, in order to challenge and inspire him or her in the most effective way. I strongly believe in the power of developing the person as a whole to grow, and instilling the ability to listen, to be curious and to make learning and practice fun and with confidence.

Working with students, I aim to ignite their love of music. With an open attitude and leaving our ego out, we explore how to use their body as well as their mind most effectively to achieve their goals. We then look for practical, physical and mental tools to enable expression of ideas to flow freely on the cello.

Ultimately I consider my job a success when my students grow into independent and audacious cellists who love to learn, and who understand the power that music has for themselves and their environment.
I have enjoyed performing in the worlds Major concert halls as well as part of intimate chamber music concerts.

Testimonial" 'I have found my love for the cello again because of Julia's teaching, and even like to practise now!' -Larissa aged 13

I prepare student for all ABRSM exams and have a 100% success rate with these, but prefer not to have this as the sole priority in my classes.
