Personal Description:

I'm Joe, I'm a composer based in west/north London and originally from West Wales.

I attained a scholarship in composition at the Royal Academy of Music, where I gained a First Class Degree with Honours alongside the Turner-Cooke composition award. I'm currently on a one-year master's course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

I've been lucky to have had a very supportive group of teachers/mentors that have guided me to this point, and I feel passionate about providing this to others. I feel that music education is something that whilst having its own immediate benefits, can complement many aspects of our lives, both educationally and in a skill-based capacity, but also in relation to our understanding of ourselves and our individual creativity.

Outside of music, I'm particularly interested in visual arts, good coffee rugby and am a fluent Welsh speaker.

Tutoring Experience:

As a composition tutor i have experiences working 1-1 within classroom environments, and in a workshop setting. I have taught composition in line with syllabus led contexts such as GCSE and A level composition requirements, as well as artistically led composition and orchestration. Alongside composition, i teach music theory across all levels and specialize within 20th/21st century music theory.

Tutoring Approach:

Most lessons are delivered with an individual- led, student-centred approach, in which I aim to harness the student's individuality and provide tailored teaching based on the strengths and interests of the student, all within a positive environment. My teaching will cover aspects of compositional technique and orchestration alongside bespoke tasks that will hone your creative instinct.

I am comfortable teaching in a holistic, artistically led sense, as well as providing tuition designed to support a student through GCSE and A level syllabuses. I offer tuition to all age groups and am comfortable adapting my teaching style to work with students of any age.

Having trained within a conservatoire setting (Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama), I have experience of what is required to gain a place within this environment and prepare students for applications for conservatoire courses.
