I have taught 5 string banjo for over 20 years and try to ensure each student gets lessons in the specifics they want/require. My priority is to provide tuition for the songs and styles desired by each individual (I work part time as a music transcriber allowing me to literally teach any song you would like to learn!). In addition I offer lessons on the original version of Dueling Banjos - as heard on the soundtrack to the film "Deliverance". It is the only note-for-note transcription of the piece that I know of. I tailor lessons to developing the techniques required for performing the piece.
Since 2002 I have taught privately from my home studio. I have always found it more productive to teach one-to-one as I can spend time with individuals to develop their unique style.

Tutoring Approach:
I know how difficult, time consuming and frustrating learning an instrument can sometimes be. It is because of this that I have developed a unique teaching method that will result in you being able to play what you want and how you want to play it; in time creating your own style. The aim being to make practice a pleasure!

JonathanFrom Hazel (5/5): Jonathan is a gifted banjo tutor he has started with the basics , how to anchor my right hand and position my left for moving up and down the neck. He reinforces these basics if I stray ! He is patient and inventive , finding ways to help me learn different sound patterns and riffs. Jonathan is also warm and personable, reliable and professional. I’m really enjoying learning to play Banjo with him.

The follow up videos are certainly worth it, as I spend the time between lessons reviewing these videos to make sure I'm at least trying to play the banjo correctly.

From Paul (/5): Had about 3 lessons before 15 years ago and now decided take up banjo in early retirement. Just one lesson from Jonathan i learnt more than 3 lessons from a different tutor. Very good ear and he goes at your pace and makes learning enjoyable. The homework and the 5 minute recap he sends are a great touch, so that you can refer to at any time. Highly recommend

It wasn't long before I had the confidence to accept new pieces and enjoy the challenge of getting stuck in knowing that, if I listened to his guidance and put in some practice, I could, before too long, hear my banjo making real music.
