Personal Description:
I am a full time, self employed musician working around Bognor Regis and Chichester in West Sussex. As well as teaching, I play guitar in a popular covers duo, I play rhythm and lead guitar and mandolin in an REM tribute band, I play bass and guitar in a three piece popular covers band and I also run several popular Open Mic nights, group guitar clubs and ukulele clubs.
My general availability is weekday daytime. until 6pm. "After school" slots (3.30pm - 6pm) are generally available but often limited, so if upon reading this you wish to make an enquiry (thank you!) please try and give me some idea of what times or days you are available, so that I can answer you quickly and accurately!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching since 2008. My youngest learner is currently 7 and my oldest is 63. As well as individual lessons, I have run several sets of group lessons, and have been running a guitar club since 2007. This club led to two others, one focusing on blues and folk music, and one for ukuleles. Although these clubs do not exist to teach, it has been a constant source of experience for working with, and encouraging musicians of all levels to develop their skills and broaden their musical horizons. Some learners have used our Open Mic nights as the next step beyond the club to build their confidence, and in one case this has lead to solo bookings and local festival appearances. Several years ago I completed the necessary training for the tutoring of evening courses for West Sussex County Council, and in 2013 I began weekly tuition at a local home for young people with learning disabilities.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in developing skills to play songs, and only use theory as a means to achieve that goal. I concentrate on playing, and techniques to make playing easier, more enjoyable and more accessible. I teach from text books as little as possible, preferring to tailor lessons to a learners specific needs and interests, because I believe the more relevant the task is to the goals the learner wishes to achieve, the more likely they are to practice and succeed.
If you are only maybe looking for flexible, occasional lessons or irregular nights because you have a busy schedule or family life, that's no problem. I don't ask for payment in advance, just that you stay in touch, and let me know what's going on. Thanks again!

Jon is a great teacher who listens and has a great relaxed approach to teaching. Jon and i have been working togetrher for several weeks and i can see a real improvement in my playing since working with him.
Jon is willing to look at diferent styles of music and has even learnt a song of my choice so that we can play it together.
I would recomend Jon to anyone looking to learn the guitar.
Very pleased Richard Welland
