Personal Description:
I began my musical studies on the piano at the age of four, adding the violin a few years later, then started taking singing lessons whilst at The Latymer School. I was offered a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, then went on to study music with a special performance course at Royal Holloway University.
I have sung in choral performances in concert halls and cathedrals across the UK and Europe and recorded the popular Millenium Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins. I was a member of the Chorus of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and have performed solo recitals and oratorio roles in Surrey, Hertfordshire and London.
As a coloratura soprano in The Felici Company, Jessica sings in concerts and operas across Hertfordshire. She teaches singing and piano at schools in Harpenden, Mill Hill and at home. I also direct a ladies choir.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught singing and piano for ten years privately and in schools. Prior to that I working for the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, which gave me a unique insight into the exam system and marking. I teach all levels up to Grade 8 and beyond. My students usually achieve Distinction or Merit marks in exams as I am passionate about working to a high level musically. One area of particular interest for me is in young voices and am experienced in guiding the developing voice using healthy, appropriate technique. I also enjoy helping adult learners of any standard, find ways to enjoy their voices. I am an experienced choir director, of both children and adults. I am a member of the Association of Teachers of Singing, regularly undertaking professional development to enhance my teaching skills.
Tutoring Approach:
Whatever your needs I want to tailor singing lessons individually to suit you. At any age and stage, we can make singing sessions beneficial.
Please do ask about a Zoom singing lesson if you feel less confident singing in front of someone, or if you live further away.
Whether you are a choir member wanting to improve your sound, a student needing help with GCSE or A-Level performance or a younger child wanting to start a musical instrument, we can work together.
Structure: Usually singing lessons start with a vocal warm-up, then we work on developing the technical and musical aspects of a familiar song. Later, we might work on some musicianship, notation or aural skills and then look at choosing a new song to learn, from a selection. I will accompany you on the piano as far as possible, or use backing tracks where appropriate.
