Personal Description:
Originally from Worcestershire, Jean has lived in Edinburgh for her entire adult life. Since studying the flute with David Nicholson and Paul Kingsley, and graduating from Edinburgh University with a degree in music, she has worked as a freelance flautist, instrumental teacher & music education administrator. She is active as an orchestral flautist & piccolo player and plays with small groups at concerts, weddings and other occasions.
She devotes a large part of her time to music education, having been Director of Edinburgh Young Musicians, which provides Saturday morning music classes for ages 3 to 18, since its inauguration in 1998. She also spent 19 years until 2017 as Director of the Scottish Schools Orchestra Trust, which provides residential summer courses and occasional days of orchestral playing for ages 8 to 15.
Tutoring Experience:
Jean has a thriving flute teaching practice based in central Edinburgh, covering all ages & stages, and has many years' experience teaching, conducting & coaching chamber music in a variety of schools and further education settings including St. George's School, George Watson's College, Fettes College, Strathallan School, St. Mary's Music School, Napier Polytechnic (now Napier University) and St. Andrews University.
Tutoring Approach:
Jean aims to help all her pupils enjoy music & fulfil their individual potential, often playing duets with them, accompanying them on the piano and encouraging them to join groups as appropriate. She believes that playing an instrument should be fun and satisfying, but that it won't be unless you do it well. The more you enjoy playing, the more you will want to practise. The more you practise, the better you will become. The better you become, the more you will enjoy playing. The more you enjoy playing…
