Personal Description:

*Lessons are currently online via Zoom (or Skype/Whatsapp) - still accepting new students!*

Jason is a freelance conductor, pianist and music teacher based in London. Jason has been playing piano since he was eight where he started lessons with Geoffrey Brown at the Blackheath Conservatoire, and later was awarded a scholarship to study the piano with Robert Hunter and conducting with Andrew Morley at Junior Trinity. Having graduated from the University of Manchester where he studied piano with Andrew Wilde and conducting with Robert Guy and Mark Heron, Jason holds the PGCE in Music with Specialist Instrumental Teaching course at the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Jason also holds the Licentiate of Trinity College London Piano Diploma with Distinction and is a keen soloist, accompanist and ensemble member. He has given solo concerts, most recently performing at various churches around Manchester. Jason has furthered his piano studies in masterclasses with John Byrne, John Irving, Ian Pace and Mark Tanner. As a classically trained musician, Jason has played the piano and harpsichord in the university’s klezmer ensemble, and performed in the gamelan ensemble. These cultural opportunities have opened new musical horizons and enhanced his skills as a musician. Jason has also had experiencing conducting and directing school ensembles.

Tutoring Experience:

Jason has experience teaching a range of ages and abilities privately, at a music service, music academy and at primary and secondary schools. Jason formerly taught at Dartford Grammar School where he now accompanies students for ABRSM exams and tutors in music theory and aural skills. He accompanies students for other local teacher's exam students, alongside music festivals and competitions. He is currently Acting Head of Music in a music specialism school in London. Jason is fully DBS checked.

Tutoring Approach:

Jason’s teaching is methodical, and both practical and theory based. His pupils have described him as an enjoyable and patient teacher, and he carefully scaffolds the lessons according to one’s needs. For younger students who have a shorter attention span, he works to make exceptional progress whilst having fun. The key principles of playing, such as posture and technique, are strongly rooted in his teaching as someone who has received Alexander Technique training. This includes simple exercises which removes unnecessary tension from the body and bad habits. His exam students have all passed ABRSM and Trinity practical and theory exams to Distinction level and he has taught from Prep Test/Initial Level to beyond Grade 8.
