Hello, I'm Jamie and drumming has been my passion from the age of nine. I specialise in hard, heavy and occasionally very fast playing and have considerable experience working in professional studios with plenty of gigs under my belt. Before I got into the rock and metal scene I played jazz for two years in a band that toured the Isle of Wight. While I'm best at what I love, I'm delighted to teach a range of genres and styles and more than happy to teach any song or beat you might like to learn, or to work on any area of your choosing, be it stamina, footwork, fingerwork, et cetera.
Professionally, I've released an EP with Novacaine Nothing (Noughts & Crosses, 2015), a single with technical-metal band proxxy (odd time signature changes and rhythms, titled Pathological Pursuits, 2018). I also recorded drums for Night Thieves on their debut EP (Battle Cry, 2020). I've also tracked drums for the immensely talented band Immortal Machinery for half of their prestigious album Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words, 2020) and have toured extensively with them throughout Europe. More recently I've been writing and tracking drums for the singer/songwriter Guy Prall (TBA). You can find plenty of my work on YT, Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp… all the usual places.
I play and teach on a large drum kit in my own professional studio near Ashford, Kent. While most of my students come to me, I'm willing to travel within 15 miles for an additional £5 fee. And of course I offer virtual lessons too.
I am happy to provide references from current students upon request. I have taught and teach children and adults alike.
I took on my first ever student while at University. He was so delighted with his lessons he offered to pay me more than I originally asked. I also have experience childminding, supervising and teaching young children.
My approach is very personal and practical. What do YOU want to learn? What is it that YOU are looking to improve?
For example, if you want to improve your speed, we can talk about the theory behind it and apply it to the kit straight away. We can delve into various exercises to help improve speed while at the same time understanding why the principles work the way they do.
Or say you wish to lean about vocal recording and mixing. We would record some vocals and go through the entire process, all the while learning about the theory that underpins it. My key approach is to mix theory with practice to get you going right away.
My approach is to provide you with as much knowledge as possible in any given area you specifically want to learn about, while pointing you in the right direction to explore and discover more for yourself. I foster self-discovery first and foremost, encouraging everyone to take the basic applications of knowledge and apply them to their own experience and understanding of how to do something or how something works. This, I feel, really facilitates proper learning and understanding.
