Personal Description:
Hello. My name is James I am a classically trained viola player and Alexander Teacher. I used to live in London but have been living in Glasgow now for a year.
I graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2016 then trained to teach Alexander Technique from 2016-2019. After I graduated from AT school I got my 'dream job' as a the viola player in a professional string quartet. I toured Europe happily playing concerts until the pandemic shut everything down.
I moved to Glasgow in 2022 with the intention of learning to play traditional Scottish Fiddle music and am having a great time.
Tutoring Experience:
I taught viola and violin at Oakham School, a private secondary school in the East Midlands, from 2015-2020. I taught 1-1 and also coached small ensembles. During this time I also taught a handful of private pupils down in London.
I coached the string section of the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra for many years.
Now my main teaching is teaching Alexander Technique which I teach privately in the centre of Glasgow. I trained to teach for 3 years and worked in the AT department at the Royal College of Music. I also ran workshops at the London School of Musical Theatre.
Tutoring Approach:
My music teaching is very informed by my AT teaching. This means that I am always considering how to use the body ergonomically and promote poise and effortlessness in movement.
I help people to play without pain. I think this is very important.
My musical education was always geared towards loving the music you're playing. I believe that if you are interested in what you are doing, practice and playing becomes so much easier. I try and instil this idea into my teaching.
I also believe that structure and a certain amount of rigour is important, both in terms of instrumental technique and also practice. I want to help people to find a structure that works for them that helps them to get the results they want.
