I graduated with first class honours in Music from Bristol University and have five years experience teaching and coaching. I specialise in helping my students apply 'proper singing technique' to their own style of singing. I will help you find your voice and make sure it's as good, healthy and musical as it possibly can be, rather than simply telling you what to do. Singing lessons with me are fun as well as challenging; get in touch if you want to improve quickly, whatever your current level of experience.
After University I joined a signed band, played several UK headline tours and countless other festivals including Glastonbury. I've recorded several E.P's and two studio albums and worked with producers Bruno Ellingham, Stew Jackson and Alex Pilkington. I've conducted choirs here and in China and sung in several small operas including one reviewed with 5 stars at the Edinburgh Fringe. I now work as a freelance performance coach and vocal coach as well as a drummer and backing singer in two different original bands and a function band. I conduct choirs and also write songs with several musical projects; I really enjoy working with students who write or want guidance with their own songs.
I qualified as a coach with The Coaching Academy in 2018 and specialise in the psychology of performance. I offer performance coaching separately but I also work with my students to reduce nerves and bring out the joy of playing music whilst onstage. If you've ever felt like you've prepared well for a performance but then let yourself down on stage because of nerves or a negative mindset, then I'm the right teacher for you.
I currently teach singing at Bristol Grammar School and have taught singing and drums privately for five years. I run one of the Bristol Show Choirs and work as a Community Singing Facilitator with Find Your Voice.
I have experience teaching young people both in the UK and in China and I also really enjoy working with adults.
I have plenty of experience submitting students for ABRSM and Guildhall graded exams. I also teach theory for your theory exams if you need support with this.
During my training as a classical singer I became frustrated with being told there was a 'right' way to sing. I strongly believe that the role of a singing teacher should be to help a student to explore their voice, to guide them away from techniques which might be damaging and to support them in developing their own style and artistic 'voice'. Ultimately my students end up with a robust 'toolkit' of techniques an understanding of their effects and the ability to apply them as they wish, rather than being confined to a single genre like 'rock' or 'opera'.
I keep my lessons fun and informal but I challenge my students because I believe that the best way to enjoy learning or developing a new skill is to see tangible and rapid improvement. If this sounds like what you're looking for then get in touch.
Coaching is ubiquitous in the business world, sports world and many others because it gets results. It is quickly being discovered by musicians who want to get ahead by changing the way they think rather than simply spending more hours in a practice room. Have you ever felt you've let yourself down in a performance even though you'd practiced? Maybe because you've been nervous, unable to connect with the audience or lacking confidence? Coaching is a process of questioning which gives you clarity in what you want, why you want it and how to achieve it. As a result you will:
- Significantly reduce performance anxiety
- Feel more connected to your audience
- Become more creative in your instrumental practice
- Explore your own creative voice and inner musician

I really recommend Jack!
He managed to lift the pressure and the seriousness off of singing, which is not something I’m used to doing in front of people, all while keeping a nice focus on technical improvement.
His knowledge and experience showed when he was able to accurately determine what level I was at in the beginning, and then by pinpointing idiosyncratic areas of improvement. In one session there were noticeable advances in some key technical areas and I left with detailed instructions on how to sharpen those bits up on my own. But maybe most importantly, it was my comfort in singing under analysis that improved.
He is a knowledgable and experienced musician and a perfect teacher for low-pressure learning environments. Thanks Jack.
He understood my voice from the word go and handed me exactly what I needed for the next steps of my development. Each lesson is a Joy and within only a few lessons I have seen a huge shift of confidence and improvement, I cant wait to see what the future has to bring!!
Thanks so much Jack
