Personal Description:
I am a scholarship student at the Royal College of Music, studying composition with the acclaimed composer Errollyn Wallen CBE. I am also a trumpet player with the CBSO Youth Orchestra and was previously a composer with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. I consider myself to always be well prepared, conciencous and enthusiastic in anything I do, and believe this enthusiasm an desire to achieve is handed down to my students as I help them through their studies. I am offering myself as a highly qualified, reliable and affordable teacher of Music Theory, Brass Instruments and Composition.
Tutoring Experience:
My relationship with the Birmingham music service as a trumpet player led to mentoring roles in ensembles, both through playing with and giving support to other students with their instrumental playing, and helping guide rehearsals for performances. So far, I have guided several students and friends through aspects of music theory, not only at ABRSM grades but also in the context of GCSE and A Level Music. My experience in teaching trumpet is mostly at beginner level, but students up to Grade 8 are welcomed. My composition teaching has so far covered mostly GCSE and A Level coursework, but as you can imagine this covers everything from pastiche to free compositions, and being a highly experienced composer myself, I can help with anything from general, free composition to preparing portfolios for entrance into institutions like the National Youth Orchestra or Music Colleges, with which I had considerable success myself in the past.
Tutoring Approach:
I draw on diverse range of musical experience and knowledge in my teaching, from my performance as a trumpeter, my composition projects, and academic pirsuits. This rich bed of knowledge gives me confidence in my teaching, but often more important is a teachers ability to explain this in a way to students that they can understand. One of my biggest strengths as a teacher is my explanatory abilities and this is what many of my students say makes me stand out from others, even those who have been in the profession for decades. My approach is to tailor each and every lesson to the students needs and desires. I will plan lessons based on what I know the student knows already, so to ensure a healthy expansion of knowledge that is never too easy, but is never too difficult either.
