Personal Description:

I’m a Cambridge-based composer offering piano, music theory & composition lessons, for all levels up to diploma (incl. grade 8):

Tutoring Experience:

Teaching private music lessons for 5 years.

Teaching group workshops in music analysis and composition for 8 months.

Tutoring Approach:

- In piano lessons we will usually cover (as suits your needs and interests): working on pieces, sight-reading, technique (scales, arpeggios, studies, voicing… ), and we also can do jazz standards, improvisation, transposition… for those interested.

- in composition / theory lessons we will combine a problem-based approach with consolidating specific techniques of graded difficulty and creative challenge (again as adapted to your needs and interests). Common topics include: general composition, music software, pop arrangement, keyboard harmony (aka: figured bass / partimento), 4-part harmony, counterpoint, writing for different instruments, orchestral scoring, and specific problems like balancing tonal regions and changing textures, etc…

If you are curious about a particular musical technique, feel free to ask!!

To give a rough estimate, currently most of my students are doing at least some classical repertoire, ranging evenly from beginner to grade 8. About 20% do jazz piano, about 15% do composition, and a few do harmony, counterpoint, scoring or pop arrangement, including one working on a pop-folk album and another preparing to become a film and video game composer.

For those interested in exam results, so far we've had a 100% pass rate in ABRSM and Trinity exams, but of course you are welcome to try and break my statistics ;)

Lesson times are variable, ranging from 45min to 90min - depends on the student's interests, learning needs and availability. Prices are tailored proportionately to the time of teaching involved.
