This is how 2 referees rated Ian:
I enjoy teaching a range of abilities from casual beginners of all ages, to more advanced students to help them make music for themselves. I started piano aged 6 and from there moved on to learn new instruments and play in a wide range of musical styles. I have experience of performing in various ensembles from large symphony orchestras to small folk groups, chamber groups to rock bands, choirs to solo performances. After graduating from Leeds University I worked in a number of schools where I have helped stage musicals, assembly and church services, arranging parts, rehearsing performers and composing new material as necessary. I am currently teaching myself to play the accordion.
I have nearly 30 years experience teaching a variety of instruments from piano, guitar, music theory and recorder to percussion and singing for school shows and choirs. I have also taught music to pupils aged 6 to 60+ and am proud that they do well in their practical and theory examinations
I believe music making should first of all be fun, and I get a thrill at the sense of discovery that students get as they acquire and hone new skills. While reading music is an essential skill for those wishing to go higher there are also other approaches that some students like to explore, such as learning to play by ear. Lessons are charged at an hourly rate but as this can be too long for younger pupils, half hour lessons are available. I travel to pupils which means they can learn in a familiar environment and on their own instrument.
