Information About Ian - Muswell Hill teacher

Personal Description:

I am a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), where I completed my Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Piano in 2017. I hold Grade 8 Distinction in Piano from ABRSM, and I have had a formal Jazz training.
I have just moved to London from Glasgow, as I am beginning my studies in Acting at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching piano for 6 years, and consider it one of the most enjoyable things I do.
I teach at all levels from beginner to advanced. I have put numerous students through ABRSM exams from Grades 1 to 8 where I have a 100% pass rate. I also have experience with teaching students of all ages, from aged 7 to 65+
As part of my Classical Piano Degree at RCS, I passed my "Teaching Musician - Piano" elective with a high A grade.

Tutoring Approach:

I have experience with taking students through the ABRSM Grade system, and I feel that it is a good course to follow for developing a student's technique, musicianship skills and performance abilities. However, I appreciate that it isn't everyone's ultimate goal with the piano. The piano is a brilliantly diverse instrument, and it should always be an enjoyable and fun experience to learn.
Having had the experience of playing in jazz bands, improvising and writing my own music, I like to explore and guide all of my students through a wide range of styles. I have also had the experience of playing with a successful Scottish pop/rock band where I played piano and saxophone, and we toured across music festivals all over the UK. With this in mind, I am always happy to teach students 'by ear' and encourage them to play with others, and pop music and chart music is always a good genre to start with this.
I am a young, optimistic and encouraging teacher with sharp communicative skills, and I will make my goal to guide and mentor my students to reach their full potential in a creative and reassuring environment.
