Personal Description:

Hello, I am Heather , and I teach the piano and violin. I have been teaching for 10 years, and I love to share music with other people.

I started learning to play the violin at 7 years old, and taught myself the piano and flute at home. At 14 I began piano and flute lessons, and achieved my grade 8 in both by the time I left school. I went on to study the piano at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and then a masters degree in Musicology at the University of Edinburgh. I now teach full time both privately and in schools, and I enjoy inspiring young people to play the piano and violin.

I enjoy all types of music, and encourage my students to play lots of different styles. I particularly enjoy playing classical music, folk music, and music from films.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching for 10 years, and have experience teaching both privately and in schools.
While most of my lessons are one-to-one, I also have experience teaching group lessons and ensembles.

I encourage all of my students to take exams, perform in concerts, and take part in local music festivals. I have experience with various exam boards (ABRSM, Trinity, Rock School, MTB).

I teach childern (age 5+) and adults of all ages and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

My music lessons promote a sense of musicality and enjoyment, learning the piano and violin in a fun and engaging environment. Technique and music theory are also key ingredients for every musician, so these are incorporated into lessons from day one. Students have described me as "hardcore but fun" and "Miss Honey with a piano"

Areas typically covered in lessons include:
- musicality and having fun
- working through repertoire
- note-reading
- instrument-specific technique
- posture
- listening skills and aural exercises
- sight reading and scales/arpeggios
- improvisation and composition
- music theory and history
- performance skills
