Personal Description:

I am currently a year 2 undergraduate studying for a BA(Hons) in Music at the University of York.
With around 10-12 years of playing my instruments and 8 years of studying music theory, I have accumulated a diploma in Music theory at distinction level, grade 8 in flute and singing at distinction level and grade 6 piano at merit level. I have also achieved an A in A Level Music.
I am eager to branch out and start tutoring seriously in all my instruments and music theory, as well as helping students at any age work towards their school work, or more specifically towards their Music GCSE/A-Level. In due course, I am hoping to gain more teaching experience from this tutoring opportunity, as I hope to teach professionally after completing my degree. I am more than happy to tutor anyone, regardless of age or musical knowledge, as I know this can potentially hinder people from taking the first leap. I promise, learning any aspect of music is very rewarding!

Tutoring Experience:

Across the past 2 years, I have gained experience teaching piano, flute, singing and music theory to students aged between 10-18 and have helped towards grades and exams between 1-6. Specifically in the last six months I have gained a lot of experience teaching online. I absolutely love teaching any student who is willing to learn any musical instrument, study music theory or just learn any aspect of music in general that they want to learn. It is very rewarding to see a student understand or improve in music, regardless of the understanding/improvement, which is what makes teaching so fun for me. It is also a privilege to be able to pass on my musical knowledge to a student the same way my excellent music tutors passed on to me.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching method is quite simply what works best for the individual. I like to organise a lesson plan, which I will then ask the student what method, if they prefer one, works best for them.
From past experiences of students and of my own, I believe the student should be able to choose a method of what I will teach, as I am confident the student will gain more understanding on the topic. Of course, if the student does not have a preferred method, then I will happily teach with my own.
My own method normally includes a fun first session where we briefly go through everything the student knows and then refreshing the students knowledge by playing/singing/studying what they have recently learnt. This of course will be followed by general music chats, a low-key music trivia most likely questioning your favourite scale (everyone has one! - mine is G minor!) and having a few laughs to make the student feel comfortable. If the student is a beginner, we will go through what they would like to learn/gain from our lessons at the beginning instead.
Singing/flute/piano lessons will most likely include warm-ups at the start, followed by scales, sight-reading/aural and then helping work towards/getting better at pieces/songs.
Music Theory lessons will most likely include going through a section at a time on past paper exams. I might throw in a mini quiz just to make sure you are keeping updated with theory terminology!
Casual sessions will be focusing on anything the student would like to learn.
