Personal Description:

As a professional musician I have been across the world experiencing everything from television, radio, recording sessions, big bands, theatre pits, function bands and just about anything else you can imagine. I’m also solely a bass player, I’m not a guitar player who also plays bass or anything like that. So bass is my specialist subject and, in my experience not a lot of people seem to have that, or approach it without having properly invested the time in the instrument. I have studied music at both college and university. My degree is in Popular Music from Edinburgh Napier University (Scotland) where my specialist subjects was first study bass guitar.

Tutoring Experience:

As a teacher I have taught privately for 10 years. Outside of this I have also taught as an instrumental instructor in schools and in youth centres. I’ve got a wealth of teaching experience from the absolute beginner to more seasoned player, regardless of age group. I've had students pass exams with extremely high marks both in school and outwith it. Students have gotten accepted to places in college or university, started bands, joined bands and generally just enjoyed playing more.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic I have been teaching online to students across the UK. On top of that I also have students from as far away as the USA & New Zealand.

Tutoring Approach:

‘It’s all on Youtube’. All you ever have to now is look online and have access to a wealth of information for free that’ll keep you going decades. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, the small amount of great information is dwarved by the overwhelming amount misinformation being provided by people who don’t understand music or their instrument. More often than not these resources are showing you something rather than teaching you something.

Another problem with video lessons is who is overseeing your progress? Who is there to help provide feedback and guidance along the way? When things go wrong, and they do, who is there to help you understand the problems and put you back on track to achieve your musical goals? Who understands your goals and your personality to help you personally understand things? Who is there to hear you playing to reassure you that what you are doing is right or what areas need work and help you improve these? This immediate feedback and mentorship between a student and teacher has existed throughout time and always been the best way to learn music. This mentorship is something online video lessons or **Contact Detail Removed** really can’t replicate for you the individual. Everybody learns in different ways but why do people opt for a platform that removes the individual?

Working with a good teacher who understands the difference between showing you something and teaching you something will help you improve faster, play better and be far more confident in what you can do. Someone who is working with you individually helping you to build a knowledge base that is applicable to music allowing you to play and create what you want.

Every student who studies with me will learn the craft of music as well as a thorough knowledge of the bass guitar. You wouldn’t study Maths with a teacher who doesn’t know how to count or an English teacher who can’t use grammar. Don’t let your musical education be any different. There are bass teachers who don’t know how many keys there are in music or even the notes of their instrument! By learning a thorough knowledge base you are able to take the skills and knowledge you have learned forward to any style of music that you want to play!

There are no tips, hints, hacks or secrets the pros use but don’t tell you. By studying with me you won’t ever need them anyway, as you’ll be sure to know exactly what you are are doing at any given time.
