Personal Description:

I'm a professional classical singer and all-round musician. I have sung principal roles in major opera houses including the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. Within classical music, I have a particular passion for Song and I have recorded many operas and songs for Hyperion and other labels.

Tutoring Experience:

I first taught in my early twenties in a small music school in France where I also founded a community choir which is still going now. At that time I taught singing, piano, flute and recorder, as well as a class for pre-schoolers called "musical awakenings".

My current students, piano and singing, are aged from 5 to retired. As well as teaching enthusiastic amateurs, I also give singing and coaching lessons to professional classical singers.

I have very good French, German and Italian and can coach songs in these languages, using International Phonetic Association transcriptions if required.

Tutoring Approach:

Please note my rates include 6 free holiday-time lessons a year. Also that my singing teaching rate listed here is for waged learners - for the unwaged (including children) I offer a substantial discount.

I like to use many strategies to pass on a rounded set of musical skills and a sense of creativity in the learning experience. I have a very flexible but focused approach and I believe lessons should be fun and also challenging. Every student is unique and I love to work with whatever they find most exciting - the emotional side or the cerebral side, the familiarity of repertoire well perfected or the the novelty of tackling new music - all the time encouraging them out of their comfort zone as well.

For singing lessons I don't require my beginners to learn to read music, although I strongly encourage it. For non-classical singers I can teach a good safe technique which can be the basis of other more specialised techniques such as those found in musical theatre and pop.

I could offer online tuition for theory, for adult piano (not total beginners), for help with memorising songs, and as supplementary sessions alongside practical tuition lessons.
