Fran is a postgraduate classical voice student at the Royal College of Music in London. Fran took her undergraduate in psychology and additional postgraduate studies in music performance at Royal Holloway University of London, where she sang as a choral scholar in the Choir of Royal Holloway. Here she enjoyed both singing in concert and training in ensemble skills with the King's Singers and Eric Whitacre. Fran has also had ensemble training with members of The Sixteen, Eamonn Dougan and Sally Dunkley. She has sung in the Royal Albert Hall’s 2015 Festival of Remembrance, broadcasting live on BBC1, and performed at the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta Festival, attended by The Royal Family and the Prime Minister.

Fran enjoys singing in live broadcasts, notably on BBC Radio 3, with the Britten Sinfonia, the Choir of Royal Holloway, and the international Jazz Trio Acoustic Triangle. She also sung in the UK premier of James Macmillan’s St. Luke Passion, which was performed in the Barbican, and broadcast on Radio 3 from King’s College, Cambridge. Fran has recorded 3 Albums under Hyperion label with the Choir of Royal Holloway.

Fran built upon her vocal skills whilst training for the ABRSM singing exams. She completed the exam series with a distinction in Grade 8, and was invited to sing at Cadogan Hall for the 120th anniversary of the ABRSM’s foundation. She trained in solo performance in masterclasses with Mary King and Sarah Fox, and has enjoyed participating in courses specialising in Opera and Song, focussing on aspects of vocal technique and dramatic performance. She brought these skills back to university when leading peer workshops for vocal performance under her role as head of development for Royal Holloway’s Opera Society.

At Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, specializing in the performing arts, Fran was awarded the Best Female Classical Vocalist prize, and the school Chapel Choir won Best Student Led Ensemble under her direction.

Fran has delighted in performing in shows such as Fiddler on the Roof, Bittersweet, Dido and Aneas, The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance. Her favourite role to date is Mrs Lovett, in the Royal Borough Youth Opera’s performance of Sweeney Todd, where she could fling pastry around the set and make meat pies of her fellow actors.

Fran has sat on the panel in auditions for Royal Holloway’s Savoy Opera Society, and for the university’s Choral Scholarships. She has enjoyed both on-screen acting and singing for the audio recording for Delirium, the finale of a feature film trilogy by Scenario Films.

Fran also is a keen pianist, and enjoys playing a range of music, from Mozart, to Debussy, to Gershwin. She delighted in accompanying singers during her work In the Royal Holloway Opera Society.

Tutoring Experience:

The majority of Fran's experience is with students aged 11-18, although Fran has taught in institutions and privately across all age ranges. Her youngest piano student had been 6 years old, and her eldest singer, 70. Fran coached the principal singers in Sweeney Todd, Sir William Borlase's Grammar School's senior musical in 2019. She also worked as a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, helping neurodiverse students with a wide range of needs in reading and verbal skills, writing and maths. A large part of her work here was teaching methods of symbol recognition as a pathway to reading fluency, and Fran applies this method to the musical score for a fresh approach to sight-reading, and has seen excellent results.

Tutoring Approach:

Fran has a life-long passion for music, and a strong teaching ethic to nurture her pupils’ general musicianship, as well as their performance technique. Fran's academic background in psychology and knowledge of learning and memory enriches her music teaching. Although she believes that general musicianship (including listening and sight-reading skills) and performance technique are the keys to seeing one's own progression in music, she takes a holistic and flexible approach to fit the individual's personal goals and learning styles. She also has a particular interest in performance anxiety management, a topic in which she lectured while at Royal Holloway University. Fran works alongside her students to set their goals and organise a weekly practice plan, with specific activities to best fit their goals and needs.
