Personal Description:
Hi!
I specialise in teaching classical guitar, as well as music theory, and I'm looking for new students to share my enthusiasm for the instrument and its music.
Tutoring Experience:
I've been teaching guitar privately since 2018, at a wide range of levels, and have been delighted to see my students progressing - some have taken on grades, while others have just worked through pieces they were interested in and developed their skills along the way. I mostly specialise in classical guitar, but I've also taught folk and singer-songwriter guitar styles, and am always eager to expand my musical horizons. As well as teaching guitar (and also philosophy!) privately I've worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the philosophy department at Sheffield University between 2015 and 2019, and as a temporary lecturer in 2017.
Outside of teaching itself, I'm really enthusiastic about making music with friends and building musical community. Over the past year or so I've enjoyed making recordings to release on my YouTube channel, by myself and in collaboration with a group of friends. What I enjoy most about this is being able to provide people with excuses and encouragement to make the things they're passionate about, and I'd like to think that I bring this energy to my teaching, too. I also love folk music and being a part of traditional sessions in Bristol.
Testimonials:
"Emma is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and instructive teacher. She is always encouraging and a great source of positivity when you are struggling with something." - Steve
"Emma is an excellent teacher! I knew nothing in guitar and she has not only shown me how to play some songs, but encouraged my own exploration of the instrument by explaining how different sounds fit together in a general way. Like music theory I suppose, but in a fun and practical way that inspires me to push forward on my own genuine journey with guitar. She is patient and perceptive and gives very helpful advice, as well as being a fun, relaxed person to spend time with. I enjoy every one of our sessions and am very grateful for her inspiring me musically. :)" - Sabina
Tutoring Approach:
As well as all the kind of 'technical' stuff you might expect, I offer lessons with a focus on self-direction - my goal is to help players set and achieve their own goals, develop their own understanding of how to interpret and relate to the music they are playing, and decide on a programme that will enable them to really enjoy what they are doing. I welcome both children and adults, at any level of ability.
