I am a caring, patient and passionate flute teacher, with 24 years experience. I tailor my teaching to each pupil's needs and preferences, focusing on enjoyment, expression and quality technique. I come from a classical background and am now an electronic music producer and perform my music with live flute at festivals around the world. Contact me to hear my playing and for many reviews.
I have 24 years experience teaching both children and adults of all standards working for various music services at schools, privately and in an adult education centre. My 24 years of teaching experience began at the age of 17. I completed my music degree in 2001. At my most, when I was working for one music service I was teaching 100 flute pupils a week! Now I prefer to teach privately so I can focus more on each pupil. I am also a trained secondary music teacher and worked in secondary and primary schools as a music teacher and have worked as a primary school music coordinator for Guildford music service for which I was responsible for running and organising extra-curricular clubs, programs and events.
My main achievements in my teaching have been in the standards of playing I achieve through careful focus on technique but also maintaining pupils' interests and enjoyment by choosing music they enjoy and through imaginative approaches to my teaching. For example I have rekindled the interests of teenagers who were losing interest by getting them to improvise to their favourite pop songs! It got them learning their scales too and understanding how scales are the foundation of melodies and demonstrates to them the need for ordered training in order to also experience musical freedom and how all styles of music can be linked together.
I work a lot on the psychology behind flute playing, using elements of Somatic Experiencing, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), visualisations and mediations to help my students relax and feel empowered and confident whilst playing the flute. I have found most students I have worked with have psychological blocks, which can stand in the way of playing, so have developed many ways to help remove these, which also has a positive effect on their every day lives. I like to think of it as “flute therapy”.
From the beginning, I teach students the correct techniques to facilitate optimal tone production in all dynamics and registers, and how to use their diaphragm to drastically improve breath control. From my experience, I have learned that there are common psychological and physical interactions that often cause lip and throat tension and reduced airflow, thereby making it difficult for students to reach the high notes. To aid with this, I have developed several effective and simple tone exercises and empowering visualisations, and am constantly evolving and developing new approaches together with my students.
Above all, it is my pleasure to hear my pupils playing expressively and being able to pass on the gift of music to others. I have been told I am an inspiration to my pupils, but they are also an inspiration to me! I have been lucky to teach people from age ranges 4-75. I work with each pupil to help them relax and achieve the very best they can and get the most enjoyment out of the gift of music.
