Personal Description:
I’m 41 years old and have been both learning and teaching music for nearly 20 years. Although I came to music relatively “late,” I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been taught using the Kodály concept by outstanding practitioners. Thanks to this foundation, I’m fluent in movable-do solfège and musically literate. Learning through Kodály has given me a strong internal sense of music, and as a result, I pick up new instruments quickly. This adaptability allows me to teach a broad range of music-related subjects with confidence.
At the moment, my main musical interest is folk music, which I enjoy playing on the mandolin. I also play classical guitar to a reasonably high standard—at least when time permits! In addition, I know enough piano to accompany my son on the violin and to teach beginners.
I have two children (ages 4 and 8), and we’re very involved in Colourstrings Music School in Kingston on Saturdays. My son has been part of Colourstrings since he was 18 months old and began playing the violin at age six. A recent source of great family pride is that he was accepted into the National Youth String Orchestra (NYSO) after a successful audition.
In my own teaching, I’ve had some notable successes. One of my long-standing guitar students recently won the guitar category in the Berkshire Young Musician competition and has since been admitted to the Junior Royal Academy. Another former student went on to study composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
I’m also passionate about early years music education. I’ve learned a great deal from Stepping Notes Music School, whose teacher training is excellent. I’ve also had the privilege of observing my own children participate in his classes. Currently, I run a weekly music class for children aged 3 to 6, which I find incredibly rewarding.
