Tutoring Experience:

I am a Music Teacher and have been playing guitar and teaching for over 25 years.
I teach Lead and rhythm guitar, singer song writer, classical and also solo finger style guitar in any genre.( also exploring how to work with a looper). I also teach uke to grade 5.
I have studied with Tolis Zaharliaras, Misha Nickolik (both The Institute London) Classical guitar Carlos Bonnel Professor Royal Northern College of Music.
Have taken Master Classes with
Electric Guitarists : Steve Via/ Jamie Humphries/ Dave Kilminster /Tolis Zaharliaras
Acoustic : Eric Rouche John Etheridge/ Gorden Giltrapp/
Classical : Ray Burley/John Mills.
I have taught in some of the top schools in London, ( including ex/ head of guitar department at Forest School, Snaresbrook, London.) before moving to Devon, and have had more than 70 pupils each week on my teaching schedule.
I have taught rock bands ( chords/ tab ) and classical ensembles (notation )

Tutoring Approach:

I am an experienced guitarist and have learnt from many great teachers in the past. I have studied theory books and have acquired a huge amount of theoretical information about harmony, rhythm, etc. The lesson I learned was that being a great musician has nothing to do with theory.
So i teach an understanding that melody is king and you can create this immediately from the sounds inside your head on your guitar/uke as your skills improve. This is great fun!
I study the music that interests pupils and look to make this music their own.
I can teach how to read tab or music notation (from scratch) or rhythm and chords.
I also explain the need to work on chord shapes, scales and phrases as this is all useful when writing songs or playing covers of any Genre.
I give pupils the option of studying towards grades with Trinity Rock n Pop, Rock school or RGT.
I delve as far into theory as the pupil wishes. It is important to understand theory, however focusing on theory alone will not make you a great musician, so there are lots of practical playing opportunities. Please get in touch for an informal assessment lesson. I look forwards to working with you.
Regards . David
