Personal Description:
I have played the piano for 25 years and am passionate about music, both listening and playing. I have always had a deep interest in music theory and love to discuss and teach this during my lessons. I have a degree in music from the university of Liverpool.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching the piano privately for 4 years and have developed a strong relationship with my students. I have 5 years experience working in classroom settings in both a musical and general capacity. I have a lot of experience working with children with special educational needs such as autism both in the classroom and private piano lessons.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a deep love for music and a passion for sharing this with students. I have taught many people from all walks of life (children and adults) and take an adaptive approach to teaching. The way a student learns and the time frame in which they learn something varies greatly from person to person. I see it as my job to adapt my approach according to the needs of the individual student.
I love to teach music theory as well as the history of the music. I like my students to understand the wider context behind what they are playing. This gives them a strong musical understanding. I also incorporate lots of singing into my lessons, particularly with the younger students as this helps develop their ear.
I follow the ABRSM grade system and have a 100% pass rate (including grade 5 theory). I encourage students to take grades (particularly children) as it gives them performance experience but ultimately leave it optional. I understand exams come with exam stress and use strategies to deal with this head on!
I consider myself a lifelong learner and am always keen to learn new skills. I believe putting myself in the position of student greatly improves my abilities as a teacher.
Finally, I try as best as I can to make every lesson fun and exciting for my students even when covering the “boring” but necessary bits such as scales!
